How to Choose a Roofing Contractor in Moncton (and Get It Right the First Time)
Your roof protects everything underneath it: your family, your belongings, your biggest investment. So who builds it matters as much as what it's built from. We're a third-generation roofing company in Greater Moncton, and this is the same advice we give friends and family. It holds up whoever you end up hiring.
1. Ask for proof of licensing and insurance
In New Brunswick, any contractor working on your home should carry liability insurance, which protects your property if something goes wrong, and WorkSafeNB coverage, which protects their workers and keeps the liability for an injury off you.
Ask for proof before work starts. A reputable company hands it over the same day you ask.
2. Choose local and established
A local company has a track record you can check, neighbours you can ask, and every reason to stand behind the work for decades. Look for a real local phone number, Google reviews from local homeowners, finished jobs you can drive past, and a company that will still be here next year and the year after. That's who honours a warranty.
3. The Cheapest Quote Is Rarely the Best Value
Get 2 or 3 estimates. Then read them closely, because the lowest number is often the most expensive roof over ten years. A rock-bottom quote usually gets there through thinner materials, skipped prep (decking repairs, ice and water shield), or a warranty that only lasts as long as the company does.
A good estimate spells out:
- The full scope of work, in plain detail
- The exact materials: brand, product line, colour
- The cost breakdown across materials, labour and disposal
- The timeline for completion
- Both warranties, workmanship and manufacturer, in writing
- The payment terms
4. Read the reviews, then verify them
Google reviews are the fastest read on a company. Look at quantity, recency, and what people actually describe: communication, cleanup, follow-through. How a company responds to its reviews tells you plenty too. Ask for 2 or 3 references from recent jobs nearby; a confident company has them ready.
We keep every one of ours posted word for word, each with a link to verify it on Google.
5. Understand both warranties
Every new roof carries two.
The manufacturer warranty covers the materials themselves and comes from the shingle or metal maker. Coverage terms vary by product line, so ask exactly what gets registered for your roof.
The workmanship warranty covers the installation and comes from your contractor. Ask what it covers, how it's honoured, and whether it's in writing. Paper is the whole point. Here's how ours works.
6. Slow down when you see these
Today-only pricing. Deposits over half the job. A scope described out loud with nothing in writing. Cash-only with paperwork "to follow." Mid-job upcharges with nothing shown to you. Real roofs come with real paperwork, and genuine mid-job discoveries (like hidden rot) come with photos, a plain explanation and your say before anyone proceeds.
7. Ask these before you sign
- How long have you been working in this area?
- Can I see proof of insurance and WorkSafeNB coverage?
- What exact materials will you use, brand and product line?
- Will you strip the old roof down to the decking? (You want a yes)
- How do you handle decking damage when you find it?
- Who supervises the site day to day?
- Is the workmanship warranty in writing?
- What does cleanup look like when you're done?
A trustworthy contractor answers all of these directly. Confident, specific answers are the pattern you're looking for.
8. Trust your gut
You're choosing who works on the most important part of your house. When the answers are vague, the price seems impossible or the timeline feels rushed, keep looking. The best companies earn the job with clear answers and a track record, and they give you room to decide.
